“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him. - Matthew 4:19-20
In 1519, the great explorer Ferdinand Magellan set out to do something no one had ever done: sail around the globe. This was during a day when many people believed the earth was flat. People believed that a sailor could potentially sail too far and fall off the face of the earth. Nevertheless, Magellan set sail from Spain with five ships and became the first to sail the Pacific Ocean by way of the Magellan Strait. Though Magellan died in battle in 1521, one of his ships made it back home three years after they set sail with good news of discovery. Magellan embarked on this journey guided by a simple belief that there was more to this world.
2,000 years ago, we find Jesus, there on a shoreline, inviting fishermen to give up everything and follow him. In that moment, these men had a choice: They could continue life as usual or embark on a journey with Jesus. Without hesitation, these fishermen dropped their nets, their way of life, and decided to follow Jesus. They didn’t know where Jesus would take them, what it would cost them, or how following Jesus would change their lives. But there was something about this Jesus they believed to be worth following.
In the same way, Jesus invites us all to follow him, walk with him, and let him change our lives from the inside out. Jesus promises that following him is the only way to life and life more abundant (John 14:6; John 10:10). So what are we waiting for?
