Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. - John 10:7-10
Has there been a time in your life where you’ve asked the question: How did I end up here? How in the world did I get to this place? How did I end up here in a marriage that is barely hanging on? How did I end up here with my finances completely buried in debt? How did I end up here in a job that fills me with no passion? Or how did I end up where the relationships with my kids aren’t what they should be? Or for families, how did we end up where our lives have become so frantic and chaotic where all we ever seem to be is on the run to the next thing? But if we were to simply look back we would see that we were always on the path that led to this destination. Even right now, we are on a path in every area of our lives whether we realize it or not.
Here’s the reason we ask that question: We struggle to live life on purpose. So when life hits, and I promise you it will, without a purpose in place, we kind of just kind of react and go where life takes us. We say Yes to too many things. We say No to the right things. We feel like we need 30 hours in a day just to be up to speed with the pace of life. Before we know it, we get on this track called life and every now and then we look up and say: How did I end up here? But, there are also moments in life when we didn’t have to ask that question. Why? Because we lived with intention and purpose.
One question Jesus never asked: How did I end up here? Jesus lived a clear sense of purpose.
The decisions he made. The places he went. The people he associated with. The things He said Yes to. The things He said No to. The times that he taught. The sick that He healed. The storms that He calmed. The miracles He provided. All of his life. Driven by a clear sense of Purpose. Over and over again, Jesus told people why he was here: He came to bring life! This purpose shaped his entire life journey. Here’s an incredible lesson to learn from Jesus:
Living with clear purpose will influence our priorities.
Clear priorities have the potential to drive our decisions.
Daily decisions shape the reality of our lives.
