After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an ox goad. He too saved Israel. – Judges 3:31
His story is summed up in one verse. That’s it. One verse. He wasn’t a king. He wasn’t famous. He wasn’t powerful. He wasn’t wealthy. He was basically a nobody. But overnight Shamgar became a hero. Six hundred Philistines came in to overthrow God’s people and takeover the Promised Land. During this day, the Philistines were some of the most feared people in the world, trained warriors, built for takeovers just like these. The only person that stood in the way: Shamgar. A farmer.
Could you imagine? No army to fight back. No weapons. Zero. Zip. Nada. Not even a dull sword. All Shamgar had was an ox goad – a stick about eight feet long used to prod oxen pulling a plow. Yet, God used Shamgar and his ox goad to defend an entire nation and keep the enemies out.
Shamgar took what he had and used it to the best of his ability to serve the Lord. What a beautiful lesson. We can waste our whole life waiting for things to be different before we actually do something. Or we can believe that God has given us everything we need to make an impact. Shamgar had a stick and his bare hands and conquered a small army. Consider all that God has given you to start your journey. Take what you have, your abilities, your passions, your gifts, and get started!
