After months of prayer and several times of fasting, Pastor David and Melissa believe this move is another step of faith that Christ is asking them to take. If you know Pastor David then you know he did not take this decision lightly.
Our seven year vision of connecting an additional 2,000 to the love of Christ, baptizing 1,000, and raising up and sending out 100 God-called men and women into ministry is both a staff-owned and church-embraced vision. The seven year vision wasn’t Pastor David’s vision for FFC but a vision that God gave to our church as a whole. We will continue to striving to accomplish these God-sized goals.
Summer basketball camps are already scheduled and will go on, as well as our plans for a fall sports league for the children and families in our area. Our sports ministry is a key component of our seven year vision which is why we designed and built our new worship and recreation space like we did.
No. Pastor David’s call to Mississippi was a specific call for him and his family. Our current staff will rise up and carry on the ministry of FishHawk Fellowship and our missions of “Building Bridges that Connect People to a Passionate Life in Christ.”
As stated in our church Bylaws, when a vacancy in the senior pastorate exists, a Pastor Search Committee shall be established. The Search Committee will be responsible for screening all resumes, interviewing applicants, and confirming the qualifications and experience of top candidates. The Search Committee will be comprised of the Chairman of the Pastoral Council, Chairman of the Deacon Fellowship, and five (5) members, and two (2) alternates (to substitute if a vacancy among the at-large members of the Pastor Search Committee occurs) elected at large by the Voting Members in a special called Membership Meeting. With the exception of the Pastoral Council and the Deacon Chairman, the members of the search committee will be male and female.
There really isn’t a way to answer this question directly because so much depends on God’s timing. We want to move forward by faith, with much prayer, seeking God’s direction as we go.
Yes, the search committee process outlined in our church bylaws is there to consider all qualified candidates as we pray and seek the man that God has called to be our next senior pastor.
In the days to come there will be a landing page on our church website with all the latest news and updates regarding this process.
We believe the church is Better Together. So, during this transition, we encourage you to lean in. Stay connected in a Life Group, continue to worship with us on the weekends, continue to be the church: Pray, Serve, Give, and build bridges that connect people to a passionate life in Christ.
Here are 3 specific ways you can pray:
1. Pray for the Whitten Family. After 15 years of faithful service, the Whitten family will be moving to a new city, new home, new church, and new way of life. Let’s lift up David, Melissa, Morgan, McKinley, and Madison for this transition.
2. Pray for Temple Baptist Church and the people of Hattiesburg, MS.Pray for their staff, church, and community as the Whitten’s begin their ministry there and that God would use this move in a mighty way in that community.
3. Pray for FFC.Pray for unity within our church, encouragement for our staff, and for God’s clear direction going forward. Pray that this time of transition will strengthen us as we move forward.
Absolutely! Since Pastor David was due to be on a two-month Sabbatical during the months of June and July, our preaching calendar is set through the first of August. We also have an exciting summer schedule for people of all ages! With Vacation Bible, two basketball Camps, Student Camp, and of course our regular weekend worship services, there will be great opportunities to invite your friends to church. We always see large amounts of first-time guests joining us over the summer and we expect this year to be no different. So by all means, keep inviting and keep welcoming those you may not recognize!
As stated above, our other Pastoral Staff were already scheduled to preach over the summer. We will also have a few guest speakers along the way.
For the most part both the SBC and FBC will play the role of an encourager in our search for a new Senior Pastor. Unlike other denominations, every southern Baptist church chooses its own pastors and staff. Should we ask them to, both the SBC and FBC will provide us with resumes of prospective candidates and/or post our open search process on their websites. In addition, different leaders within the SBC and FBC might also recommend people to us if they think someone would be a good fit but to be clear, the SBC and FBC do NOT appoint pastors to churches.
You can go to the senior pastor search landing page on our church website or you can email with any questions that you have.
While there will be a change in senior leadership in the future, the mission and vision of FFC will continue to move forward. We will continue to have inspiring weekend worship on Saturdays and Sundays. All of our age-based ministries will continue to provide compelling environments for our kids and students. Life Groups will launch again this Fall. We will continue to be intentional, pray with hope, reach beyond our walls, and speak God’s truth in love.
